Abstract:

Ridges are bright lines on a dark background (or dark lines on a bright background). An accurate mathematical definition of ridges presents some difficulties (arising also in other similar problems):
there are several intuitively justified definitions which are not equivalent mathematically and which lead to quite different results in practice.
We discuss a "differential-geometric" definition of ridges and compare it with some other possible definitions. Then we describe a stable high order numerical algorithm for ridge detection.
