Abstract:

Inspired by the unanswered question: why eukariotic DNA has a so large non-coding fraction, we try computer simulations with an evolutionary toy model based on Turing machines. This lead us to describe how the fitness of an ``organism'' and the evolution rate relate to the coding/non-coding ratio. The evolutionary advantage of having a large reservoir of non-coding states is emphasised.
